Product photography

Product photography at the studio

A few weeks ago we were contacted by a client that needed photographs of a few security products like radios and similar.
The objects were quite small and made out of black plastic except for a couple of parts like the earbuds and some other metal bits.

The challenge was to show off the products very close and in details. We decided to use a macro lens as this was the best option to get very close for such small objects. The chosen lens was the Nikon AF-S VR Micro NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED Lens

This is a superb lens. We use it often at the studio not only for macro photography but also for portraits/headshots. It is very sharp.

After choosing the lens the second step was to setup the lighting in a way we didn’t have to everything for each object. We discussed this with the client and opted for a modern look on almost white background and soft shadows. The objects were placed on a frosted perspex to get a tiny amount of reflections at the base.

The lighting setup is illustrated below:

We were pretty happy with this setup so we shot all the photos (over 20) without moving the lights once in position.

As you can see above we used quite a few Elinchrom lights including 2 of the new Elinchrom ELC Pro HD . We used many light modifiers including a beauty dish with diffuser on, 2 stripboxes, a small softbox and also used a 5in1 reflector as a diffuser. This is the same equipment you can use when hiring the studio!

Below are some of the photos we took.
