One of the more difficult tasks to get the perfect picture that every photographer wants is photographing animals. Weather it’s a dog, cat, rabbit, reptile or whatever animal it could potentially be, it can be challenging. However, with the right tips it is certainly possible to get the brilliant pictures you want. You just need the right knowledge to go about it…
Patience is a must
When an animal is on set it may seem obvious but realise that it’s not a human! They’re never going to be as easy to take a picture of as a person is as their not really going to understand what is going on. Also they could potentially be feeling a variety of different emotions on set, so it’s important not to get frustrated with them. Even though it may be hard not to, getting frustrated will never help and your much more likely to get that perfect shot if your patient and calm at all times.
Macro all the way! 
Getting close up shots of pets can look amazing. It’s quite remarkable to see crystal clear pictures of the skin and fur of the animals and to see all those micro details you would usually miss. Eyes are also another great feature to zoom up on as you can get some really interesting and sometimes even spooky photos.
Please don’t use Flash
When possible try to stay away from using flash as it may spook and frighten the animal. Not only that, but it could also cause red eye problems as well. If push comes to shove, it might be a better option to either take the animal outside, or near to a window which has a lot of light coming through. Natural light will usually work best for photography lighting with pets.
Make the animal feel comfortable
You won’t get great pictures constantly trying to force the animal to do certain things. So instead it will be much better if you go towards them and get on their level. That way your much more likely to get the animal to relax and could also get potential shots that may of not been possible unless they felt in that particular state.
Sometimes experimenting is best
Not every pet that you take pictures of are going to be the same in species, behaviour, temperament, looks and many other factors that come in to play. So whist the animal is on set experiment and switch it up from time to time. You may even get some top pictures whist trying new things out which you never thought of before.
Do what you can
On the other hand, despite trying to get fantastic pictures of the pet, sometimes it may just not be the right day for it. However, following the tips provided you are much more likely to get the results you want.
